Attaching a Customer
You attach a customer by picking them from the recent list or by searching for them, and you can detach at any time to return the sale to a walk-in. This page covers finding a customer and putting them on the sale.
Walk-in or attached
Every sale starts as a walk-in, with no customer. You attach a customer when you have one. Not every sale needs one, so a sale with nobody attached is a normal sale, not an unfinished one.
The quick way: recent customers
When you open the customer screen from a sale, a list of recent customers at this till is already there, with no typing needed. For a regular who came in recently, you can attach them with a single tap.
Searching
Type a name, a phone number, an email address, the customer's member reference, or their tax registration number. Results appear as you type. There is no minimum number of characters, and if you leave the box empty, you simply browse the list.
- Which details you can search on is set by your store, in the back office, so a store that files customers by something unusual can search on that too without a new version of the app. Two of them are always available whatever else the store sets: the member reference and the mobile number.
- A customer that someone retired in the back office does not appear.
- Searching by tax registration number works today, with nothing to turn on, unless your store has narrowed its own search settings in the back office.
Three lists, three reaches
The customer screen shows three things, and each one can see a different amount of the business. This is the most common reason something looks wrong here, and none of it is a fault.
| What you are looking at | How far it reaches |
|---|---|
| Search | Everything the whole system contains |
| Recent customers | Only customers served through this till's own profile, which is narrower than the store if the store runs more than one till |
| Lifetime spend and visits | The whole company, across every store and both kinds of sale |
So this can happen, and it is correct: you find a customer by searching, they are not in your recent list because they have never bought here, and their lifetime total is large because they shop at another branch. All three are true together.
Attaching and detaching
Tap the customer and confirm. The sale now carries their name. The attached customer stays pinned at the top of the screen, so you never have to search for them twice. When you tap that pinned row, The Customer View opens.
If you picked the wrong person, or the customer changes their mind, detach them. The sale goes back to being a walk-in and carries on, so you never have to cancel and start again.
When the network drops
Searching and attaching keep working with no connection, from a copy of the customer list on the device. Offline, search matches on a smaller and fixed set of details rather than the ones your store configured. What still works offline, and what it searches on, are covered in Working Offline.
